Having the elastic built-in allows your dog to not be stopped once they pull a little bit too hard it allows them some give which I 100% percent love.
(also if you take the leash off on a nature hike you can toss it around your shoulder and it has a little clip that you can clip it into for an easy way of having it go around your shoulder without flopping around everywhere.
